Bluebird Flies In Derby
01/03/09 - Ellerslie

Scenic 3YO, Coniston Bluebird, triumphed in a thrilling finish to the $2.2 million NZ Derby at Ellerslie, defeating Down The Road by a nose. After jumping, Coniston Bluebird settled back in the field, one off the fence, where he remained throughout the race. At the 600m mark, and just before the turn, Scott Seamer began to urge the 3YO forward, where he quickly circled the field, along with Down The Road. The two horses hit the front together, where Down The Road quickly got a length in front of Coniston Bluebird, however the Scenic gelding courageously began to fight back, prevailing by a nose.

Trainer Bede Murray was understandably elated with Coniston Bluebirds win, rating it as one of his careers finest. Congratulation to the owners, Bede Murray, John O'Brien, John Wilson and John Stanford and Russell Stanford.

Coniston Bluebird was selected by Darrell Ible for Bede Murray for $85,000 from the 2007 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has now won well in excess of $1.2 million.
